all と whole の違い

意味内容

両方とも「全部」というニュアンスで、その使い方に迷いやすい単語です。

all と whole は、ほぼ同じ意味内容を表しますが、句における順番が違うことがあるので注意が必要です。

共通には「全部、全体」などに訳すことができます。

例文と用法

◆ all は定冠詞や(代)名詞の所有格などがあればその前に、 whole は、その後にきます。

He watched the video tape all the night to identify the opponent's weakness.
「彼は相手選手の弱点を見つけようと一晩中ビデオテープを見た。」

We reminisced about old times the whole night drinking while distilled alcohol.
「焼酎を飲みながら一晩中昔の思い出にふけった。」

◆ whole は付加算名詞とはあまり共に使われず、また、質量を表す名詞とは共に使えません。

Mr.Black donated all his money to the Red Cross.
× Mr.Black donated his whole money to the Red Cross.
「ブラックさんは赤十字に彼の全財産を寄付した。」


◆ whole は定冠詞や(代)名詞の所有格などがなければ、単数名詞と共に使うことはできません。また、固有名詞と共に使うこともできません。

The whole nation was jubilant over the first world cup victory.
「国中がワールドカップの初優勝の歓喜に沸いた。」
