grand と ground の問題の解答と解説

grand は俗語的に1,000ドルの単位で使われますが、いつも s は付かず単数扱いとなります。
I don't think that eighty grand for this classic car is so expensive.
「80,000ドルはこのクラシックカーにはそんなに高いものじゃないと思うよ。」
2. I suppose that there is no reasonable (grounds) for the company to dismiss those employees.
「その従業員たちを解雇できる合理的な根拠があるとは思えません。」
ground を「根拠、理由」といった意味で使う場合、s を付けた複数の形にするのが一般的です。
しかしながら、これを単複どちらでも受けることが可能で、there are no grounds としても有効です。
3. Have you ever attended a kind of (grand) dinner where a high-profile figure is present?
「有名人のいる大晩餐会みたいなのに出たことがありますか。」
grand は「豪華な」といったような意味もあるので、grand dinner で「大晩餐会」と訳すこともできますね。

ground には「座礁させる」という動詞での意味がるので、be grounded で「座礁する」という意味になります。

この例文では on the ground は「地面に、地上に」という意味ですが、on-the ground とハイフンで結んだりして「現場で(の)」等の意味合いで使用することもあります。

他には フォーマルな表現として on the ground(s) で、「～という理由で」の意味での使い方があります。
